Hippies and airports

Posted by Jbu Guatemalan
Finally made it back to the states. Woke up at 5am and made it over to the airport at 6:30am. Waited in the Guatemalan airport at a pollo campero ( fast food chicken place) until I could board my plane at 11:40am. I met a nice couple ( they were hippies for sure) while waiting in the lobby. It was a guy and a girl and they came up to me and simple said " hey man, I think they switched our boarding gates and we're over there" as he pointed across the room. So I moved my guitar and backpack over along w/ the couple. At first they sat away from me but then I think after realizing that I was the only other person remotely close to their age they moved back over. I could tell he wanted to talk and sure enough he gestured me to come sit with him and his girlfriend.

He asked me what I was doing in guatemala. I explained to him that I had been there 2 weeks, the first one of which I helped build a new kitchen for a church and that I had spent the 2nd one searching for my biological parents. This fascinated the both of them. I told them how i had been sent to an orphanage and then pseudo adopted by my foster parents until I was adopted by the family i live with and have lived with for the past 20 year. This really interested the woman because she had just finished working at an orphanage for the past 5 months. They asked about my mother and situation and you could tell how exited they were.

After boarding the plane we still kept on talking. I explained to them my past mission trips and explained a little about why i did them and how i believed that because i was spared a life of poverty that it only seemed fair to give back part of that gift and opportunity to other who had been less fortunate than me. The woman told me how she could relate to that in saying how she thought the world would be so much better if we all just gave a little back. We didn't go too much into religion but we definitely connected in some of our world views which was exciting.

After arriving in Houston, TX we decided to help each other through customs The guy joked about getting his weed though , I didn't really know what to say but to laugh awkwardly and said " yea, i'm worried about getting my cuban cigars back". After getting seperated for a while due to crazy lines in customs we eventually found each other and they guys said to me " hey dude, it's been great talking to you, why do we all get a drink before he head off onto our seperate ways". I was up for it and we got some drinks and talked a little bit more. He asked about what I wanna do next. I said " I just wanna see the world and all the people in it. I'm going back to mexico to build house for poor people and hopefully goin back to honduras to work w/ street kids". When we we're done drinking he said " hey, my names mike and this is tera, we just met you dude, but you seem like a solid guy, i'm glad we ran into you, i don't know if you're one of those christian people or what not, but damn, you're going places and i'm jealous, keep living dude" and we parted ways.

I think to how many mike and tera's i could have met in my past travels. It's true life is found in the opportunities , even the ones we miss.
